ARA: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has withdrawn recognition for the BEd course conducted by Veer Kunwar Singh University (VKSU)) from the next academic session (2018-2020) for failing to meet the criteria laid down by the council.
The NCTE had constituted a committee for inspection of BEd institutions in Bihar as per direction of the Patna high court order dated October 19, 2010.

Accordingly, the committee inspected various colleges and varsities of the state including the VKSU from February to May 2010. The Eastern Regional Council (ERC) in its 159th meeting held on August 6, 2013 discussed the issue and a notice was issued to the institution. The notice states that VKSU was granted recognition for BEd course on 04.10.2006 and was allowed to admit 100 candidates from academic session 2006-2007. But the required number of faculty members have not been appointed by the university till date.
The main ground for banning admission in several BEd colleges including VKSU’s department of education, pertains to infrastructure deficiency and particularly, non-availability of regular principal and permanent faculty members. The BEd colleges are mandated to have at least six permanent faculty members including one foundation course specialist. The others are supposed to teach languages, science, social science and physical education etc. In Bihar, duly appointed regular teachers are a rarity. A significant number of colleges run on ghost faculty and in some cases, the same teacher is shown on the faculty list of more than one college.
VKSU was asked to appoint the lecturers as per NCTE regulation 2009 and submit a fresh faculty list adding names of the newly- appointed faculty members, duly countersigned by the registrar of the university on each page. But the varsity has failed to respond to ERC’s notice dated August 21, 2013 till date. Hence the ERC in a meeting held on October 8-9 decided to withdraw the recognition granted for the BEd course run by the department of education from the next academic session, said varsity sources.
